The Asscher cut is a square version of the emerald cut, with squared off corners and ‘stepped’ sides, and therefore referred to as a ‘square emerald’. Due to its symmetrical shape and the squared off corners at the top and bottom of the stone, an ‘X’ can usually be seen in the top table of the diamond.
